Behavior Help

Lara is an Animal Behavior Professional with proven experience treating canine behavior problems such as: aggression, barking, biting, chewing, counter-surfing, digging, house training issues, jumping, leash puling, running away, and separation anxiety. An Animal Behavior Professional is an expert who has completed advanced college coursework in fields such as anthropology/anthrozoology, biology, counseling, coaching, nutrition, psychology, and zoology.

Lara Mahr is vet recommended. She only uses training methods based on positive reinforcement. Lara specializes in working with anxious and fearful dogs. Convenient in-home appointments and phone consultations are available.

Puppy Class

Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting experience! Get your new furry friend off to the right start. Address common puppy concerns such as: barking, biting, chewing, digging, house training issues, jumping, and leash pulling. Train a happy, well-adjusted canine companion in a fun, positive and family friendly environment. The Puppy Start Right socialization course is available for puppies ages 8 weeks to 7 months. Lara is an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Evaluator.

All puppies must be healthy, have an exam by a veterinarian and have received the first round of vaccines (DHPP and Bordetella) at least 10 days prior to attending class. Puppies older than 12 weeks old must be vaccinated for Rabies.

Dog Obedience

Do you want to teach your dog good manners? It is never too late to teach a dog new tricks! Learn obedience skills such as: attention, come when called, down, friendly greetings, leave it, reaction to distractions, settle, sit, stay, stand, targeting, wait, and walk on a loose leash. Train a happy, well-adjusted canine companion in a fun, positive and family friendly environment. The Dog Good Manners course is available for dogs ages 8 months and up. Lara is a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner (KPACTP) and an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator

Training classes are designed to teach basic obedience, not resolve behavior problems such as aggression. Behavior problems are best addressed in private in-home sessions. All dogs in class must not display aggressive behavior towards people and other dogs. All dogs must be healthy, have an exam by a veterinarian within the last year and be current on vaccines (Rabies, DHLPP and Bordetella). Vaccines must have been given at least 10 days prior to attending class.

Private Training

Want the highest quality one-on-one dog obedience training in the privacy of your home? Private Training is for people who want quality, personalized dog training instruction in the privacy of their own home or other designated location.

Therapy Dogs

Do you have a passion for helping others and a dog with great manners? Train your well-mannered dog to bring comfort to people in assisted living facilities, hospitals, medical treatment centers, and nursing homes. Lara Mahr is a Therapy Dog Evaluator through K9 to 5 Therapy Dogs. Why K9 to 5 Therapy Dogs? This organization meets the highest training standards and is committed to using methods based on positive reinforcement. Therapy Dogs are trained to provide comfort and do not have any special public access rights under the law.

Service Dogs

Lara assists people with disabilities in training their own service dogs. Dogs can be trained to assist people with medical conditions, mobility issues, physical handicaps, or psychiatric disorders.

What is a service dog? According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is “a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.” To learn more about service dogs, visit the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Questions and Answers website. Service dogs can be trained by individuals with the assistance of a Certified Dog Trainer. Why should an individual with disabilities train his/her own dog? Unfortunately, many reputable service dog organizations have a waiting list that can exceed two years! Owner-trained service dogs form a strong bond with their handler and have a high rate of success.

Pet Sitting

Ensure your pet receives the best care while you are away. Lara has been a member of Pet Sitters International (PSI) since 2009. She has been a Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) since 2013. Lara provides pet sitting in your home so there will be no inconvenient scheduling or drop off/pick up times. Your home will be safer while you are away too! Lara Mahr is background checked, insured and bonded for all services. Please call for current rates. Book your dates early as Lara’s schedule quickly fills up, especially for holidays.

Why hire a Professional Pet Sitter?

1. Your pet experiences less stress at home.
2. Your pet is not exposed to diseases and parasites found in many boarding facilities (if you must board your pet, choose a facility associated with an animal hospital).
3. Your pet’s diet and exercise routine is maintained.
4. You will have peace of mind knowing your pet is safe in the comfort of home and your residence is being carefully watched while you are away.
5. Untrained and uninsured friends and neighbors are not overwhelmed caring for your pet.

Pet sitting services are available in: Cassopolis, Jones, Lawton, Marcellus, Mendon, Paw Paw, and Three Rivers. Please call or text at (269) 767-6080 to setup a free meet & greet session. If your location is not listed here, Lara can recommend a pet sitter in your area.

Rescue Consulting

Lara is rescue-friendly! She works with shelters & rescues in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois to teach appropriate behaviors and ultimately make pets more adoptable. Fees for consulting are based on the length of the time required, number of participants, instructional materials needed, and travel expenses/lodging. Lara offers many free services to 501(c)3 non-profit organizations. The most commonly requested consulting service is clicker training instruction. As a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner (KPACTP), Lara is qualified to teach the correct clicker training techniques to others.
